I've been looking for deals for refurbished high end old workstations (to upgrade my home server) and found one with dual 2.8Ghz Xeon X5660 CPUs and 48 GB of memory for about $250 with shipping.
I don't know enough about those CPUs. It will be a plex server, among other things, possible a VM server as well for vagrant builds.
Does that seem like a good deal?
That's around 10 year old HW https://ark.intel.com/content/www/de/de/ark/products/47921/intel-xeon-processor-x5660-12m-cache-2-80-ghz-6-40-gt-s-intel-qpi.html
It will work but probably use a lot of power
@sandzwerg I'm torn... I can get a machine with a TON of memory for cheap, and for what I want it would be pretty amazing...
Now I'm looking at poweredge R710s as an option for a home server. It would replace two older shittier servers that aren't great on power either.
It pretty much comes down to what you want to do with it
@sandzwerg Plex, and a VM host for vagrant builds. So, compiling software and transcoding video.
Yeah but how much load and how often will this happen? Plex should be pretty low and for VMs if they run all the time are use Rally mich CPU or RAM sure but most VMs I now only idle or have a low load as well
